PetSmart Announces “Buy A Bag, Give A Meal™” program

Share

PetSmart has just announced the launch of it’s “Buy a Bag, Give a Meal™” program. This philanthropic program will help thousands of rescues and millions of pets in need. For every bag purchased online or in any of its 1,500+ stores in the U.S., Canada or Puerto Rico, they will donate a meal to a pet in need.

Human food banks report that nearly one in seven Americans must rely on food bank services to make ends meet. Since pet food is rarely donated to food banks, and pet food is normally not an eligible item for food assistance programs, families often use their own food to feed pets.

PetSmart’s #ForTheLoveOfPets program will assist families in keeping their animals, even if they have fallen on hard times.

It is estimated that one in seven Americans (nearly 46 million people) rely on the services of food banks, according to a USA Today article.

In addition to pets who already have a home with a family, animal rescues around the country require assistance with feeding the animals in their care. Approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter U.S. animal shelters nationwide every year, according to the ASPCA. Of those, approximately 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats.

“While these pets await adoption and their forever homes, they need access to pet food, making pet food a significant operating expense for animal welfare organizations,” according to David Haworth, DVM, Ph.D., president of PetSmart Charities.

In a recent PetSmart Charities survey involving nearly 1,800 of its animal welfare partners across North America, only 20 percent of these organizations receive pet food donations and about 8 percent are on contract with pet food brands to receive subsidized pet food.

“At PetSmart we love pets and we believe they make us better people. To celebrate our 30 years of continued commitment to helping pets in need every day and as a trusted partner to pet parents everywhere, we want to celebrate by giving back even more,” said Eran Cohen, chief customer experience officer, PetSmart. “Throughout 2017, every time pet parents purchase any bag of dog or cat food in our stores or online, they can rest assured they are also helping feed pets in need. When their pets eat, pets in need eat, too. It’s that simple.”

The #ForTheLoveOfPets program runs from March 1 – December 31, 2017. PetSmart expects to donate more than 60 million meals during this time.
