Even in today’s pet-friendly climate, locating a truly pet-friendly rental can be challenging. Begin by looking at the city’s overall view on pets.  Are there plenty of pet retailers, including groomers, veterinarians and boarding facilities? That’s always a good indicator that there will also be pet-friendly rentals. Here are a few tips for locating one in your area and increasing your chances of being selected.

It can take a little longer to find a pet-friendly rental, so be sure to give yourself plenty of time. A good rule of thumb is to start two months prior to leaving your current location. That will provide time for your potential landlord to do some checking up.

By establishing yourself as a responsible pet caretaker, you will be more likely to obtain a pet-friendly rental.  Put yourself in the shoes of a landlord and anticipate problems before they occur. By explaining how you will keep your pet quiet during sleeping hours, showing how you maintain a home or apartment, and by agreeing to a pet deposit ahead of time, you will increase your chances of obtaining an apartment.  If possible, be sure to get a letter of reference from your current landlord or neighbors.
