New Treatment for Ear Infections in Dogs
Share
Good news for dog owners! There’s a new FDA-approved treatment for yeast-related ear infections in dogs. It’s called DuOtic and this is the first ever treatment that only targets yeast infections and doesn’t contain antibiotics. This means vets can avoid giving antibiotics when they’re not necessary, which is good for both your dog’s health and helps prevent antibiotic resistance.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved DuOtic (terbinafine and betamethasone acetate otic gel) for the treatment of otitis externa (external ear infections) in dogs, associated with susceptible strains of yeast (specifically, Malassezia pachydermatis).
If your dog is prone to ear infections and nothing seems to help, there is a very good chance it’s due to yeast. When Roscoe, our beagle, struggled with ongoing ear problems most of his life, we had the yeast cultured. This may help you avoid the cost of doing that.
What is DuOtic?
DuOtic is a gel that fights yeast infections for up to 45 days. It’s easy to use, but it’s important to get it from your veterinarian and follow their instructions carefully. They will clean your dog’s ear and then apply the medication. It’s important not to clean your dog’s ear for 45 days after the first application so the medication can work effectively.
DuOtic dissolves in earwax and is slowly eliminated from the ear. The treatment acts to fight yeast infections for up to 45 days.
A few things to remember when using DuOtic
You need to exercise some caution when administering it.
- DuOtic can irritate eyes, so both you and your dog should wear eye protection when applying it.
- Make sure your dog is restrained after application to minimize shaking their head, which could accidentally get medication in your eyes.
DuOtic comes in single-use tubes and is available in boxes of 2 or 20 tubes. Talk to your vet to see if DuOtic is the right treatment for your dog’s ear infection.
