Training Treats that Don’t Pack On the Pounds

We are still working hard on our training and we’re finally seeing some results from these hard-headed dogs of ours. They are slow learners, there is no doubt about that, and they demand to be rewarded for their hard work. So, what’s a girl to do when she’s working with dogs that tend to gain weight easily? Find low-calorie treats that actually keep them slim.

As you know, we’re huge fans of The Honest Kitchen. (If you haven’t already, be sure to check out our other articles on why we love them so much).  The Honest Kitchen just came out with a new line of training treats that the dogs and cats love, so we wanted to share them (and a few other favorites) with you.

Quickies

First off, what’s not to love about this name?! These cute little heart-shaped treats are made from 100% Icelandic haddock that has been compressed to form a tiny treat that is a perfect reward for your pup. If you have an agility dog or a highly active dog, these are really perfect for you as they are high-protein, low-carb and still contain those natural fish oils that are so important for a healthy coat. At just 1.1 calories per treat, you can feed quite a few of these to your pets without worry! Also, Quickies are packaged in a 2 oz. eco-friendly tube that can fit in your pocket while you’re on the go.

Smittens

Smittens are the feline companion to the Quickies products and I have to tell you, our cats go wild for these treats. But, before you order them, take a look at the Quickies. The Quickies are identical to the Smittens (exact same ingredients and calorie count) but come packaged in a cute little (smell-proof) container that you’ll love a lot more.

Pecks

Pecks are another fan favorite in our home. These tasty treats will make your dog go wild. They are tiny little tubes made from Buffalo, barley flower, molasses, eggs, coconut oil and blueberries. You may have seen our video using these great treats as our “launch” system for our new “crossbow delivery system”. At LESS than 0.6 calories per treat, there is nothing you won’t love!

Ice Pups

During summer, we love to give your pets frozen treats. Before you start whining to me about “bloat” and other such problems, keep in mind that we ALWAYS preach balance and our readers know this about us. An occasional ice cube will not cause your dog to “shut down” and it’s silly to keep spreading those rumors. That said, we love the Ice Pups. The package is sent over as a powdery mix so all you have to do is add water, stir, freeze into little ice cube trays (we use tiny ones that are only 1” square) and you have a perfect low-cal treat made from dehydrated chicken, turkey, whey, dandelion, asparagus, watercress, honey and parsley. YUM! (Note: You can also turn this into a tasty sorbet or serve it warm as a broth!)

Smooches

Another big favorite fan favorite are these heart-shaped biscuits known as Smooches. The thing I like most is that are not too crumbly and the dogs love them. Each treat contains only 2.3 calories for frequent treating. Made from Barley fl¬our, chicken, molasses, water, eggs, coconut oil, cranberries and Parmesan cheese .
