Cleaning Tips for Shedding (and Dust) Season

Loving your pets is easy, but cleaning up after them can sometimes be a testament to our faith – especially during shedding season. Pet hair is one of the hardest things to clean, and it can be trapped for years when it gets on your furniture and in your carpet.

As a resident of Arizona, home of the infamous haboob (giant dust storm), we also have to have a vacuum that can remove dust from… well, from everything. The expandable dust cup is the largest one you can find in a portable vacuum. (By the way, due to the amount of dust we inhale, we use affiliate links in our articles. This helps us pay the cleaning bills and keep the animals fed – despite our allergies).

Luckily, we have a few solutions for cleaning up pet hair (and dust – although the dust is an ongoing thing, so please don’t judge).

We think you’ll love these!

We received a Euroflex Monster 600XL to try out and were pretty impressed with the powerful suction and ability to remove pet hair (thanks to some easy attachments). The Monster 600XL comes with a pet brush attachment that makes removal of pet hair from sofas, carpets, and bedspreads a breeze!

At any rate, the Euroflex is also excellent for small crevices, quick cleanups in small places (where cats love to hide) and I can’t say enough great things about it’s ability to pick up cat litter! It’s also been a wonder in helping us keep the top of ceiling fans clean – no more do we have to don dust masks just to clean off the top of our fans!

We LOVE these fur control gloves from SwiPets.  The SwiPets Hair Removal Glove has a special coating and texture on the palm that is patent-pending. Simply put on the glove, stroke your pet (or furniture, or carpet, or anything that might trap fur), and the fabric creates an electro-static charge. This new patent-pending technology helps easily grab the pet hair and clumps it so you can simply pull it off and throw it away.

This is especially great tool for getting into couch and chair crevices, where hair and dust loves to gather. You can use the glove often, so don’t be put off  by the price – it’s worth every penny. They are machine washable, too.

If you brush your pet regularly, you’re going to have less fur around the house. That’s just a fact. Choose your brush wisely.

If you’re not sure of the best grooming tools to use, try using this handy guide from FURminator (our personal favorite) to select the most effective grooming tools based on pet size, type, and fur.

We use a squege to remove hair from couches. It’s very easy and I like to think it helps us reuse old squeegees. Just dampen the edge of the 6″ Squeegee and then pull it along your couches. You’ll be shocked at its ability to pull hair from furniture!

You can pick one up at your local hardware store (or on Amazon) for next to nothing… By the way, please don’t steal them from gas stations. Let’s support our local businesses!

FURminator just came out with some FURminator Shed Control Cloths . Now, we haven’t had a chance to product test these, but they do look pretty interesting and we love all of their other products. We think this would be an excellent option for keeping those pets with short hair that don’t ever look like they are shedding (but are really emitting buckets full of hair into the atmosphere).

Another favorite for removing cat hair from pets who hate to be brushed is the Love Glove Grooming Mitt from Four Pets. Just place it on your hand, pet your dog or cat as you normally would, and they won’t even realize they are being brushed! It’s great for cats who love to be petted, but hate to have their sensitive skin pulled with brushes.
