5 Ways to Secure Your Pet During Travel

When it comes to the safety of our pets, there is nothing we won’t do. For those who travel with their pets each day, pet safety becomes even more important. Here is a look at a few of the ways you can keep your pets safe when you’re on the road.

Harness: Perhaps the most important piece of travel equipment, the harness helps keep weight evenly distributed in the event of an accident. (Pets should never be secured in a car by their collar, as the potential of snapping a neck is high). We use the Auto Zip-Line and Tru-fit Dog Harness from Kurgo, which can be used with a seatbelt, Zip Line or for keeping small dogs safe in an elevated basket.

The Auto Zip-Line: This is our favorite way to travel with our three large breed dogs. We utilize the  Kurgo Tru-fit Dog Harness in all of our vehicles. The zip line is easy to set up and take down, offers the animals freedom to move about (perfect for pets who can’t be crated), and helps keep pets in the vehicle when the door is opened (for any of us who have pets that rush the door).

Back Seat Barrier: Each day, more than 15 people are killed and more than 1,200 people are injured in crashes that were reported to involve a distracted driver. The Solvit Front Seat Net Pet Barrier is a fantastic way to keep pets in the backseat while on a zip line. It creates a strong wall between the front and rear seats of the car to keep pets in the back and reduce driver distraction.

Booster Seats: When traveling with small dogs, it’s important to keep them secured and out of your lap. The Tagalong Deluxe Pet Booster Seat from SolvIt allows your pet to travel near you and see out the window, while securing them in the event of an accident. The seat holds up to 30 lbs, has a washable liner and contains an adjustable tether that you can easily secure to your pet’s harness.

Crate: The crate is an effective way of keeping pets safe during travel, but it’s important to use the proper type of crate. Wire crates can be easily crushed during an accident, and don’t offer the security pets need. Any crate used should be crash-tested and specifically designed for auto travel.
