The Healthy Hound Cookbook

Share

We have had some really great books in for review this month. If you’re an animal lover, who is interested in making your own treats for your pets, you won’t want to miss this one from Paris Permenter and John Bigley, the very talented husband and wife team behind DogTipper and CatTipper. In case you didn’t know, this is one of the most prolific couples out there and The Healthy Hound Cookbook marks their 33rd book in print!

The Healthy Hound Cookbook includes 125 easy-to-make recipes for your pets, including grain-free, Paleo and raw recipes.

So, why make your own treats for your pets? As you well know, the pet food industry is rife with problems – especially when it comes to imported treats from China. Better to have control over your pet treats, and you can’t have better quality control than when you make the treats yourself!

The book includes a list of ingredients that are important to avoid, ways you can save money on making treats (like buying seasonal ingredients and preserving them), buying in bulk, and lots more. It includes a primer on dog nutrition (including a chart on how much protein your pets need), and much more.

The Healthy Hound Cookbook separates the treats into sections for Savory treats, Training Treats, Frozen Treats, Jerky Treats (with some great alternative proteins), Holiday Treats, Meaty Meals, Breakfast Dishes, Side Dishes, Soups, Purees, Gravy and more.

Each recipe includes a short summary that discusses the benefits of key ingredients, easy-to-follow directions, and a simple list of ingredients that discusses the yield. There are plenty of tips throughout the book,

It also includes some interesting historical facts, which as you know, I love reading about. For example, did you know that…

  • … the oldest evidence of pumpkin was found in Mexico and dates back to 7000-5500 BC?
  • … a jerky gun can make preparing treats from processed ingredients quicker and easier?
  • … the green parts of sprouted potatoes contain solanine, a glycoalkaloid poison that is toxic to pets AND people?

Neither did we!

We are sure you’ll love this book and your pets will love you for caring enough to give them the very best.
