Costume or Paint: Options for Dressing up Dogs

Before I begin, I want to reiterate that I am usually not a fan of dressing your dog or cat up for Halloween. However, we have had many requests over the year asking us about safe costumes or options for pets during the holiday, which is why I have made an exception to my rule, “I will never dress my pets up for a holiday.”

And you know what? We actually had a lot of fun doing it!

These days, there are a lot of safe options for dressing up your pet and because we want to make sure everyone is doing it safely, we are going to discuss a few of our favorites and show you some really cute photos of dogs in costumes.

Animal Planet has come out with some brilliant new costumes for your pets. In this picture, Brock models the Stegosaurus costume.

They also have sharks, lions, Tyranosaurus Rex and even some fun costumes that are also a little silly (like the Silver Starlet or Cupcake costumes).

Lucky for you, these are all on sale at Coupaw and you still have time to pick up a costume using these deep discounts.

Some animals are absolutely incapable of wearing a costume. After all, they have beautiful fur coats – why should they wear a costume?

So if the entire concept of putting something around your pet is alien to them, you may want to either avoid Halloween altogether – or you could explore something like PetPaint Pet Hair Spray.

PetPaint is the first color furspray designed for use on your dog! PetPaint’s high quality colored fursprays are specially formulated, dog safe, and veterinarian approved.

This is a specific brand of spray paint designed specifically for your pet. PetPaint has undergone rigorous clinical testing to ensure the safety and health of both dogs and humans. They developed their testing protocols with a dog’s special needs in mind. The fact that dogs lick and chew introduce specific safety issues they introduced from the beginning.

It’s simple to apply with their easy PetPaint Stencil Kit for Pets that you can purchase to utilize several different designs (we used the Wild Pack).

One thing to note is that our dogs are mostly black. If that is the case, you’ll want to purchase the white spraypaint and use it as a base coat. Otherwise, the colors don’t show up as well.

Simply shake and use the templates to make up a colorful design. The pictures below are extreme examples, done by professional groomers, but it shows a few ways you can apply this paint.

It only takes a few seconds to dry. It can be washed off with mild shampoo and water – whatever you use to give your pet their regular bath. It’s not recommended for young dogs (under six months) but we suggest that you wait until your dog is at least a year before you use it, and please use it at a minimum.

No matter what you choose to do for Halloween, be certain your pets are safe and calm. Costumes should be worn prior to the big day and photographed early. During Halloween, your pets should be locked safely and comfortably in a quiet room where they can watch a little TV and zone out with their favorite chew toy. Leave the actual trick or treating to the human kids.
