Ingredients and Sourcing of Pet Food

When we stroll down the aisles seeking out the perfect pet food, there are thousands of things to consider.  Not only do you have to move beyond the claims made by pet food manufacturers, you have to consider the nutritional analysis, ingredient lists, packaging, testing protocols, and more.  These days you need to be a nutritional expert, and also have degrees in agriculture, marketing, manufacturing, and biology to really understand a label!

There are always questions when it comes to reading pet food labels – but one of the most important questions, which is also one of the most overlooked, is where ingredients are sourced. The places where ingredients are sourced are just as important as the ingredient itself.

One of the foods we began investigating recently is the new Hill’s® Ideal Balance™.

Because high quality ingredients and safety are top of mind, we focused on the obvious – and that is quality of sourcing. We learned that all of Hill’s dry foods are manufactured locally, right here at home in the USA, in their own facilities. We were also happy to find that Hill’s carefully chooses high-quality ingredients, most of which are sourced from the U.S., with all meat and poultry coming from USDA-inspected facilities. Ingredients sourced outside of the U.S. are monitored just as strictly as those from the U.S., and Hill’s has zero tolerance for Salmonella. In fact, they conduct more than 60 quality checks on every batch of food, every ingredient can be tracked by batch or ingredient, within 24 hours, and over 1,000 Salmonella tests are conducted every month.

There is plenty of helpful information on the Hill’s website and you can even compare Ideal Balance against other natural pet foods to receive recommendations on the right food for your pet.

There is a lot involved with feeding pets a properly balanced diet. Even with natural pet food, it’s important that foods not have too few or too many key nutrients. I was pleased to learn that not only is Hills Ideal Balance in perfect balance for overall health, but even their wet food and treats have no corn, wheat, or soy and they contain no artificial flavors, colors or preservatives.

In all, it appears to be a well-balanced food that dogs and cats love to eat, and which you can feel good about feeding – from a company with a proven track record in nutritional excellence and quality control.
