Does your cat have a drinking problem?

Share

Recently, we embarked on a six-week journey with our friends at Purina One to learn more about our cats True Nature and water became a number one topic of concern between participants. Because cats are descended from feline desert dwellers, it’s become a common misconception that they don’t need much water to survive. This is simply not true. A cat’s body is made up of over 70% water. Traditionally cats would hunt and eat prey, which is where they would pick much of the moisture needed. But nowadays, cats rely heavily on dry kibble with cans or raw food used as a supplement. What all of this means is, your cat is probably not drinking enough water.

Convincing Your Cat to Drink

Without enough water, cats are prone to urinary tract infections, bladder infections, and the development of crystals. The best way to avoid these is to remind your cats to drink more water, and then trick them into doing so. One way we can do this is to locate a pet water fountain that simulates water as it appears in nature. The theory is that if your cats are fascinated by it, they will spend more time near it, and eventually they will drink from it, thereby consuming more water.

We have learned that fountains will do exactly that and as an extra bonus, the fountains become a source of relaxing sound for the humans in the home. A happy cat plus a happy human equals a happy, relaxing home.
