Delta Airways has the following policies on pet-travel:

Pets are allowed as both carry-on and checked luggage. Restrictions vary for UK and US-based animals, so please refer to their website.

Fees: $125 each way as carry-on, $200 each way as checked baggage.

Notes:

- No pets to Hawaii, Hong Kong, or the UK.

- A 10 day health certificate is required for International Flights. While there is no certificate required by Delta for domestic flights, upon arrival the state may require a certificate.

- Dogs, cats, and domestic birds are allowed as carry-on.

- Delta allows a large variety of animals to travel as checked baggage. Please see their website for the full list.

Air Canada has the following policies on pet-travel:

Pets are allowed as both carry-on and checked luggage. Restrictions vary for UK and US-based animals, so please refer to their website.

Fees: $50-$100.00 each way as carry-on, depending on itinerary. $105 and up each way as checked baggage ($270.00 international).

Notes:

- Only cats and small dogs are allowed as carry-on. Only cats and dogs are allowed as checked baggage.

- One pet per customer as carry-on, two pets per customer as checked baggage.

- Maximum allowable weight is 22 pounds or less, including kennel.

Jet Blue has the following policies on pet-travel:

Pets are allowed as carry-on luggage. Restrictions vary for UK and US-based animals, so please refer to their website.

Fees: $100 each way.

Notes:

- Cats and dogs only.

- Four pets allowed total per flight, one per customer.

- Pet and carrier combined must weigh 20 lbs or less.

- One pet per carrier.

- Must call to book pet.

- Must have vaccination records, vet certificate and pet tags for each pet.

- TrueBlue members traveling with their pet will earn an additional 300 TrueBlue points for each pet fee paid.

Southwest Airlines has the following policies on pet-travel:

Pets are allowed as carry-on only. Restrictions vary for UK and US-based animals, so please refer to their website.

Fees: $75 each way.

Notes:

- Only cats and small dogs are allowed on as carry-on.

- One pet carrier per customer, with a maximum of two pets of same species per carrier.

- Does not require health certificate from veterinarian or vaccination records. However, upon arrival, states may require this information.

Like many pet owners, husband and wife Dan Wiesel and Alysa Binder always included their animal companion -- a Jack Russell terrier named Zoe -- in their family vacations. Too tall to fit under an airplane seat, Zoe inadvertently limited the couple’s destinations to locations within driving range of their Florida home.

But in 2005, Wiesel and Binder decided to travel a greater distance. Reluctantly, they flew Zoe in a commercial plane’s cargo hold. “After the plane landed, she just wasn’t the same,” remembers Binder. “It took almost two weeks for her to seem back to normal.”
