When TSA Takes Your Catnip

I’ve just returned from Blogpaws and the first thing I noticed when my cats unpacked my bags is that all of the catnip toys are missing. In their place was a little note from TSA saying that they, “...inspected my bag”.

What they should have written is:“Travel safe - and thanks for all the catnip”.

It makes me wonder what goes on in the shadowy depths of the terminal... Is there a scent dog trained to sniff out catnip? Is it a closet cat lover who searches bags on the hunt for catnip, Valerian Root and Silver Vine?

Maybe one of the many cats who the airlines have lost during transport are carefully sorting through the bags, removing the ones they most love - maybe these lost cats now live high in the rafters of the terminals and stockpile little catnip toys for their cold nights. (That’s actually a thought that makes me happy).

Regardless, my airline catnip problems have been going on for years...

Creating the Ultimate Cat Enclosure

Cat patios (catios) are all the rage this year, and with good reason. Cats need to be able to get outdoors and explore. It’s in their nature. They must be able to feel a breeze on their whiskers, sniff the newest scents surrounding their territory, climb tall trees, explore new surroundings and in essence; give them the opportunity to be a cat.

Joe and Shelley Delrocco, the founders of PetTreeHouses.com PetTreeHouses.com understand the true nature of cats and they have developed a tree house that dwarfs all others. Standing at nearly 20 feet tall, this tree now resides in the Oregonian home of Amber Stockdale.

Two stories tall, the enclosure is wrapped in a beautiful rod-iron fencing, leaving plenty of opportunity for the cats to experience the feeling of being outside, but not escape. We can't imagine they would want to escape. With twenty feet of tree to explore and the protection of a home, this outdoor area allows them to see and experience the great outdoors without having to put their life at risk.

Domestic Violence and Animals

We cover a lot of topics here on PetsWeekly, not all of them super serious. My reasoning for this is that believe if we dwell on positive things, we’ll attract positive readers. But the fact is, life isn't all sunbeams and unicorns.  This topic, if it reaches only one person, will be worth the time it took to write about it - because domestic abuse is something that affects not only the spouse, but the family, the pets, and everyone else the abuser comes in contact with.

In my time doing animal rescue, I’ve witnessed many women (and men) who were giving up their pets because they were finally ready to leave their abusers, yet, they knew the abuser would take out their anger on the pets. In fact, that is how I wound up adopting Aquilla, one of the most terrified dogs I've ever had. I’ve seen dogs and cats that were killed after the abuser threw them against a wall, I've heard of cases where the dogs or cats were hung, choked, beaten or stabbed. I’ve seen a horse with its tendons cut  - all because some cowardly, miserable excuse for a human was seeking to punish a spouse who left.

Close Encounters of the Furry Kind

Note: This is a lovely story from a committed feral cat volunteer and fellow animal rescuer, Ethan Rutkoff. I hope you'll leave a comment so he knows how much it means to us that he continue his great work. Without further ado, I give you "Close Encounters of the Furry Kind."

I come in the dark from distances no one knows of, from the outer reaches of the out there. I arrive in a huge contraption of some sort, inhaling environment, and spewing odorous waste. It is noisy with all sorts of undetectable, unnatural sounds, and has lights all over it. It is burning hot, and truly looks ominous and impenetrable. (My new routine) I slowly turn into the alley, stop and dim my lights. Pairs of shiny little beads pop up, each topped by pointed oversized ears. I blink the white high beams two times, wait a moment, then the orange flashers twice, a moment, and then the high beams twice. Some run in fear. Some prepare to defend. And some are just curious. I inch the ‘monster’ forward to where I put the food.
